Cadillac Formula 1 has named nine-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES race winner Colton Herta as its first-ever Test Driver, a key step as the team prepares to join the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

The second-generation driver, son of IndyCar and ChampCar veteran Bryan Herta, first competed overseas in 2015. His career earned him four wins, six podiums, and five pole positions in the Euroformula Open Championship, as well as three podium finishes, including a victory at Brands Hatch, in the British F3 Championship. He returned to American racing in 2017 and has since built an impressive résumé.

Now entering his eighth INDYCAR season, Herta boasts nine wins, 16 pole positions, and more than 1,000 laps led in 116 career starts. He holds the distinction of being the youngest driver to win an INDYCAR race and pole position, a milestone achieved at Circuit of the Americas in 2019 — also home to the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. Beyond INDYCAR, Herta has collected multiple IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship class wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona (2019, 2022) and an overall win at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2024.

Transitioning into a new role with TWG Motorsports, Herta becomes the first Test Driver announced by Cadillac Formula 1, following last month’s announcement that Valtteri Bottas and Sergio “Checo” Pérez will form the team’s inaugural race driver lineup for its debut season. Details on Herta’s 2026 racing program will be shared at a later date.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Cadillac Formula 1 Team as a Test Driver,” said Herta. “This is a dream opportunity and one I’ve been working toward for a long time. To be part of Cadillac F1’s entry at such a pivotal time is something I couldn’t pass up. My dream has always been to race in Formula 1, and I see this move as a huge step toward that goal.”

General Motors President Mark Reuss added that Herta’s arrival strengthens a world-class lineup: “Colton is an accomplished young driver with solid roots in American motorsports who will bring sharp insights and a relentless drive to push performance forward to the team. This lineup, supported by our engineering hubs, combines world-class talent, innovation, and determination that will accelerate our progress as Cadillac F1 moves toward Melbourne in March.”

With Herta now on board, Cadillac Formula 1’s roster blends proven F1 experience with emerging American talent, setting the stage for an exciting debut on the global racing stage in 2026.
